Part Three: Columbia

So I am running behind on posting Christmas! We are to part III. Columbia. We left STL on Christmas morning after breakfast, so that we could spend the day with Dane' mom, dad, and brothers. We also got to see his uncle and fiancee. It was a really fun day, very relaxed. It was nice not to have any time constraints. We were not in a hurry to get back by a specific time, which made for a nice long visit. There were, of course, a ton of presents followed by a nice ham for a late lunch. The boys had fun visiting with Pop, Nana, Uncle McKay and Uncle Connor. It was a great way to round out a busy Christmas. Here are some great pictures from our Christmas with the Stanglers.

A Merry Christmas to all to to all a good night. This concludes the holiday posting.  We were happy to return home and get the boys back on a routine. It helped that they had so many new toys and books to play with! (not to mention more presents to open from Lynnie and Richard back in KC) Thanks to everyone in our families for making our Christmas 2008 so memorable for us and the boys! We wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year in 2009!

Random Bits from the Boys

As relatively new parents, the most common piece of advice we hear from more experienced parents (of course, is anyone ever really an "experienced" parent?) is to savor these early years in particular because they fly by so quickly. After the one-hundred and seventeenth time of hearing this, you tend to ignore it. But we can already tell, comparing Liam and Gavin, how much we have forgotten just about Liam's first year.

Gavin is now one, and is the same age as Liam when Katie was roughly two months along in her pregnancy with Gavin. But when we think back to Liam at twelve months, we have an unbelievably hard time reconstructing precise memories of him. Pictures help jog recollections, but those don't suffice for all those times we thought we'd never forget of Liam learning to walk, eating solid food for the first time, pulling on Monona's ears, etc.

This blog offers the opportunity to keep a running log of random things the boys do and say that, while they are memorable now, we are sadly apt to forget in ten years. So in this first installment I wanted to just list some recent things the boys did that made me laugh or stop what I was doing and try to mentally photograph the moment.

We're trying, so far unsuccessfully, to toilet train Liam. The other day, while changing his diaper, I asked him if, instead of a diaper, he wanted to wear underwear.
Daddy: How about Diego underwear?
Liam: Nooo (in a singsong, not a whiny voice)
Daddy: How about Elmo?
Liam: No
Daddy: How about Thomas?
Liam: How about I wear a diaper?

I can't exactly reconstruct Liam's tone of voice, but I just laughed when he said this--he sounded so funny and so adult about wearing a diaper!

Gavin is already the rough and tumble one. Liam and I have a game in which we tackle one another--called, of course, "Tackle." Gavin has quickly picked this up and, in his toddling way of early walking, will walk toward me and simply dive into me with his arms outstretched and emit what I can only describe as a half-growl, half-yell. It is hilarious.

I took the boys to the Learning Tree toy store the other day to buy a baby doll for Liam. (He loves baby dolls. Whenever we go to someone's house, or to day care, or to the babysitting room at the JCC, all Liam does is take care of baby dolls.) Once we went into the toy store, all Liam wanted to do was play at the Thomas train table and all Gavin wanted to do was walk around everywhere and pull on anything within his reach. So I took Liam over to the baby doll section, but he either lost interest or decided that big boys don't own baby dolls, because when I asked, "Do you want to pick out a baby doll?" he answered, "No, I want this truck!" The workers must have thought his father was attempting to steer him away from "boy" toys. (Of course, when we went back out to the car, Liam decided he did, after all, want a baby doll, which we duly went back in and purchased. Liam takes good care of "Baby Girl.")

Gavin climbs onto the fireplace every five minutes, and he knows he is not supposed to--he gives a look over his shoulder with a smile that lets you know that he knows this is not right.

It seems like, in the week surrounding his birthday, Gavin's ability to walk has simply exploded. He is getting so fast with better balance every day. "Da" is his favorite sound. He will stand at the couch or ottoman and put his face down and then pop it back up, expecting one of us to say "Peekaboo!" or "There he is!" He cracks up.

Part Two: STL

Here are a bunch of random pictures from the STL portion of our Christmas adventures. I had to start with this one because it is SO cute! We spent a couple of days in St. Louis visiting family and friends before the official festivities began. We got to go to lunch with Dane's grandparents and his cousin. We also stopped by my Uncle Larry and Aunt Mickey's house to see the extensive model train set-up that my uncle has. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures from their house, which is too bad, because they had a great time.  I also got to see my friend Katie and her husband and step-daughter. It was a lot of shuttling the kids around, but they were troopers.

The day after we got into town, Tom and his fiance, Jen, got to my parents house and then Terry and Andrea. The boys were excited to see their aunts and uncles. It is rare that the Weber siblings are all under one roof, so it was a ton of fun. My mom bought a new version of Cranium and it was hilarious. All I can say is that my little brother portrays Brooke Shields like nobody's business!

We celebrated our family Christmas on Christmas Eve with way too many presents and a delicious famous breakfast compliments of Chef dad. Then we headed to my Uncle John and Aunt Mary Alice's for the big Ryan gathering. The kids all had fun together and it was so nice to actually get to go to a family function! Plus, the rates we got at Hotel Weber were reasonable given the sweet accommodations.

The Other Christmas Story: Part One

We didn't just celebrate Christmas this year, we celebrated Christmas four times. Yes, four times. I was actually off for the holiday. That makes two years in a row (keep in mind that last year I was about to birth Gavin, so we were stuck in KC at home preparing for G-day). I was really excited to get to go to St. Louis and Columbia and do it the way that I remember Christmas being like as a kid...lots of family, fun and general chaos. First we celebrated in KC. I wanted the boys to be excited about our little family Christmas and have it first to avoid overtired, overstimulated boys at the end of our trip. The Friday before Christmas we had dinner over at Lynn's house (Dane's aunt) just like we do most Fridays, but then we came home and opened presents. Liam was so excited it just got me pumped for what was to come. Here are some pictures of our little KC Christmas. Of course, these were the "mommy and daddy" presents, as it was too early for Santa.

Feeling Old (A blog shout out to Sheila)

On the first night that Dane, the boys and I were in STL for Xmas, we went out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Immediately after being seated, we ran into the Jones family. This is what made me feel so old. This family used to live in my old neighborhood that I spent probably thousands of hours babysitting for! I haven't seen the kids in quite some time. Their oldest is in high school. WHAT?! I started babysitting their oldest (I think) when he was about 6 weeks old...maybe younger. I cannot believe that he is in high school. Their second son is the age that I was when I started babysitting the first. This blows my mind. Their youngest does not remember me because when she came around I had sadly moved on to college. I even went to Mexico with these people on vacation.  It was so great to see the kids and how grown up they are, but made me simultaneously realize that I am getting old. Sheila told me that she has been checking our blog, and therefore, this is a shout out to her. Thanks for making me realize how old I must be if I am now the one looking for the babysitter! It was great to see you, Jason and the kids! I wanted to squeeze those boys but didn't want to scare them off since so much time has passed. Hope that you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
